UY Scuti was once a normal red giant star, but due to a series of unfortunate events, it was pushed over the edge and became a hypergiant. The first event was when it was caught in the middle of a cosmic collision between two other stars, which caused it to absorb their mass and become larger. The second event was when it was struck by a powerful solar flare that caused it to lose a significant amount of its outer layers, revealing its massive core.
